A spurt in demand pushed up broiler chicken prices by Tk 30 a kg within a week in some of Dhaka’s kitchen markets.
On Friday, broiler chicken was sold for Tk 195-200 per kg, up from Tk 170-175 from the last week. Traders sold the Sonalika chicken variety for Tk 290 a kg, a Tk 10 rise from last week.
Bangladesh Poultry Khamar Rokkha Jatiya Parishad General Secretary Khandker Mohammad Mohsin told The Business Post that the broiler was sold at Tk 200 per kg in various kitchen markets. “At the wholesale level, chicken is being sold at Tk 145-155 but in retail market, traders increased the price illogically,” he said, hoping that they would decline within a week.
Some traders blamed a sudden rise in demand for the price hike as people welcomed a new year. Besides, various festivals, including weddings, also affected the market.
In mid-September and October last year, broiler chicken prices soared to Tk 190-195 per kg, registering a Tk 40-45 rise in price. Sonalika prices jumped to Tk 320 a kg in mid-October, up from Tk 290 in the previous month.
Onion prices fall
Meanwhile, onion prices have cooled down after the seasonal production of the popular kitchen item hit the market.
On Friday, a kg of onion fell to Tk 50 from Tk 60-70 a week ago. The local onion is being sold for Tk 40 per kg.
On the other hand, a litre of bottled soybean oil was sold for Tk 160, while the unpackaged variant cost Tk 136.
