Service jetty, overflow yard inaugurated at Ctg port

A service jetty, a modern tugboat, an overflow container yard and a swimming pool were inaugurated at Chittagong Port on Sunday.

The service jetty will be able to take the berthing of the port's own vessels. Ocean-going ships will be able to berth at the jetty with the help of tug boats built by Western Marine Shipyard, a local shipbuilder. About 4,000 TEUs containers can be kept in the container yard.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the facilities. He said the projects inaugurated at the beginning of the new year would enable Chittagong Port to increase its facilities.

Referring to Chittagong Port as the future regional transport hub, the state minister also called upon the port officials and employees to make utmost efforts to keep the country's economy afloat.

He also commended the port for its uninterrupted services during the pandemic.

With the construction of Patenga Container Terminal, Matarbari Deep Sea Port and Bay Terminal in the future, the situation in the port will change drastically, he added.

Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said that the port is working tirelessly for the country’s development. Combining life and livelihood, the port was kept open 24/7 in the coronavirus pandemic when the world was stagnant.

To ensure a smooth flow of imports and exports, we have taken precautionary measures adding off-dock, shipping agents, Main Line Operators, feeder services, and transport owners by road.

At the inaugural ceremony, Captain Sohail Hassan, Managing Director, Western Marines, said, many backward industries have developed in the shipbuilding industry. We will be able to provide opportunities to the local industrial establishments.

He handed over the builder’s certificate, a replica of Tugboat, to State Minister Khalid and Rear Admiral Shahjahan.
