Bhasantek slum dwellers’ assoc demands restart of project

Bhasantek Punorbashon Prokolpo Bastobayon Sangram Parishad has called on the government to restart the Bhasantek Rehabilitation Project and allocate flats in the names of slum dwellers and low-income people.

It raised the demand during a press briefing at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday.

During the briefing, the association’s Secretary General Shakhawat Hossain Dulal said the allocated land should only be used for the project and permission should not be given to any individual or organisation to build anything else there.

He said slum dwellers had not been rehabilitated since their evictions in 1996-97 and not even a single building had been erected in the project area in the last 12 years.

The association demanded a new master plan be made and type-A flats of 315 square feet instead of 215 square feet as well as type-B flats of 495 square feet instead of 395 square feet be built by taking advice from experts.

Moreover, it demanded flat recipients be given bank loans with minimum interest and be allowed to repay loans in long-term instalments in order to minimise their hardships.

It also demanded a fair investigation into corruption in the project. Besides, it sought involvement in all the project activities, saying it represents slum dwellers.

Dulal said they would take the next step if the government did not fulfil the demands within 15 days.

The association’s President Advocate Abdur Rauf Akando and Vice-President Md Ratan Khan were present at the briefing among others.
