8th Shahidullah memorial debate starts at DU

The eighth Muhammad Shahidullah Memorial Debate Festival under the theme “Anacharer Sorbograshi Rodhe, Jukti-Mathal Namuk Protirodhe” started at the University of Dhaka on Thursday.

The festival was inaugurated at Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall, and it will run till March 27.

As the chief guest at the inauguration, Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, pro-vice-chancellor of the university, said, “Despite his piousness, Shahidullah was an intellectual and a rational person. He considered human beings as human beings. He never saw religious divisions as divisions.”

“He led his life prioritising logic as he was a rational person. He was not greedy. That is why he did not pursue his career at Santiniketan although he got an offer.” Professor Maksud said debate makes a man sophisticated and teaches him how to be patient in personal, social, and political life.

Editor of The Business Post Golam Sarwar in his remark as a special guest said, “Debate makes a man rational and sharpens his intellect. When a man thinks about something, he usually thinks about it rationally. Those who think rationally develop this quality through practicing knowledge.”

He said Shahidullah was the greatest linguist in South Asia, who did research on 18 languages and had proficiency in 27 languages.

“He played a pivotal role in making Bangla one of the state languages ​​of Pakistan. He continued his movement for Bangla language by overcoming all fears of the Pakistan government.”

Shahidullah Hall Provost Professor Mohammad Zabed Hossain, Moderator of the hall’s debating society Professor Dr Mohammad Azmal Hossain Bhuiyan, Dhaka University Debating Society President Sheikh Md Arman, President of the hall’s debating society Md Ariful Hasan, and General Secretary Siyam Sikder spoke at the programme.

Thirty-two universities and 12 colleges are participating in the festival. Daily Amader Shomoy and The Business Post are the media partners of the festival.
