Gas prices depend on subsidy: Nasrul

Gas prices in Bangladesh depend on the finance ministry’s subsidy, and though the rising prices of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in the global market are a major concern, the government is optimistic about handling the matter accordingly.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid made the remark while speaking at a press conference at the power ministry on Thursday.

When asked whether the gas prices will go up further, Nasrul added, “The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) can say if the prices are increasing or not. They have held a hearing on this matter. “We want to keep gas prices at a tolerable level.”

Discussing the possible impacts of gas price hikes on the power sector, the state minister said, “We want to keep the power sector stable, but the rising global prices of oil and gas are putting subsidy pressure on the government.”
