Director General of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) AHM Shafiquzzaman on Saturday said their action against the profiteering tendency of a section of essential commodity sellers will continue.
He also called on the business community leaders, including the FBCCI, not to take the side of dishonest traders.
Safiquzzaman came up with the views while discussing the market situation in Chattogram with the business people at the conference room of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry with CCCI President Mahbubul Alam in the chair.
The business people at the meeting complained that the prices of commodities increased for a number of logical reasons but various government agencies were harassing them in the name of the Ramadan campaign. Businesses want relief from this, they said.
Responding to the allegation, AHM Shafiquzzaman said there was no need for a campaign if traders are selling commodities at proper prices. “But the reality is different. That is why the fight against dishonest traders will continue,” he said.
He questioned despite the fixing price of edible oil by the government, how the price changed by Tl 600 to Tk 700 per tonne.
“The president has warned everyone about commodity prices. The prime minister also spoke in parliament on the issue and the commerce minister is monitoring the market. The rights of all the 180 million consumers in the country must be protected,” added Shafiquzzaman.
