The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved 11 projects, including one to empower women with the help of technology, to be implemented at a cost of Tk 4,541 crore.
The approval came at Tuesday’s ECNEC meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. She joined the meeting virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.
After the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan said six of 11 projects are new and five are revised. He also said the entire cost would come from the state coffers.
The ICT Division will implement a project in 130 upazilas of 44 districts under eight divisions at a cost of Tk 250 crore by December 2024.
Under the project, 25,125 women will be trained in information technology (IT) for five months in four categories. 48 seminars on women empowerment through the applications of IT will be organised.
Another project involves expanding the operations of milk-based cooperatives in upazilas facing milk deficiency. Its estimated cost is Tk 156.88 crore.
“The prime minister directed the Rural Development and Co-operative Division to gradually expand the operations of such cooperatives in those upazilas to meet the growing demand for protein,” Mannan said.
He said the prime minister had directed the city corporation authorities to gradually become self-reliant instead of depending on the government.
Referring to a Mymensingh City Corporation project, he said the prime minister emphasised proper waste management.
State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam said the premier had stressed the need for agro-processing initiatives in the private sector to produce ghee, powder milk, and cheese from milk.
Other projects approved at the meeting include addressing waterlogging in Narayanganj Sadar upazila and excavating canal from Bahaddarhat’s Baroipara to the Karnaphuli River.
