The peat soil of Beel dakatia located in Jashore district can become a valuable source of carbon production with comparatively low cost, according to a new study conducted by Bangladeshi born researcher Dr Md Abdul Aziz.
The Journal of Energy Storage has recently published the study. Dr Md Abdul Aziz is a research scientist at the interdisciplinary research centre for hydrogen and energy storage of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia.
The utilisation of peat soil in the carbon production can potentially prevent soil erosion and improve water quality and animal habitat quality. Besides, the production of peat soil-derived carbon has the potential to assist not only the energy sector but also the environment and the general population.
The Beel dakatia is a moderately to highly flooded, poorly drained peat basin located in the northern part of Khulna district and southern part of Jashore district that covers a gross area of 11,609 hectares.
Carbon is one of the versatile materials used in modern life that has wide application in drug delivery, coating, energy generation and storage, gas separation, water purification, sensor fabrication, catalysis etc.
Md Abdul Aziz has been researching on low cost sources for good quality carbon production. He has also prepared various types of carbon from different Bangladeshi sources like jute stick, Jamun leaves, Pithophora polymorpha filaments, banana leaves, Bhant leaves and tal palm, coal and showed their excellent applications in different fields like sensors, energy storage, water splitting, high performed anticorrosion coating development, etc.
At the initial stage, Dr Aziz’s team collected peat soil with the help of local representatives. Then they pyrolyzed the dried peat soil to make high quality heteroatom-doped electrical conductive carbon. Then they fabricated high performed super capacitor with the prepared conductive carbon.
From his long experience on carbon researches, Aziz mentioned that there is a scope to make variety types of high-quality carbons from the Beel dakatia peat soil to develop a lot of modern instrument or devices for human welfare.
Government and private sectors should come forth to assist the research as it can significantly improve the socioeconomic life locals, Dr suggested.
