The Kalabagan police station construction on the Tetultala playground continues despite protests by locals, environmental organisations, and eminent citizens.
On Tuesday, several workers were working there and police officials were on guard while a few children were playing. Some locals were watching helplessly as construction progressed.
A police official told The Business Post they were overseeing construction while Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) media and public relations wing would give further details.
Earlier in the day, DMP Deputy Commissioner (media and public relations) Md Faruk Hossain told a press briefing all legal rules had been followed to acquire the land for constructing the police station.
He said a survey had found the playground is owned by the housing and public works ministry.
All legal procedures were followed when the land was allotted to DMP, he added.
On Monday, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said he had asked the city corporation and others concerned to find an alternative site for constructing the police station.
Environmental organisations on the same day demanded the government withdraw the decision to build the police station there. They also urged the government to keep it open for all.
On Sunday, Kalabagan police picked up Syeda Ratna and her son Mohammad Isha Abdullah for protesting to save the playground. They were released 13 hours later following an undertaking that she would not demonstrate to save the playground.
On Monday, 37 eminent citizens issued a joint statement demanding the playground be kept undamaged and open to all. They also sought departmental and legal action against the police officials liable for detaining Ratna and her son.
They described the detention as a blatant violation of the constitution and law.
