The formation of a sustainable and transparent national industrial safety framework is the order of the day in order to keep industrial disasters at bay and retain a sustainable progress, experts have said.
They made the remarks while addressing the first Industrial Safety Forum (ISF) that took place in Dhaka on Thursday.
The event was jointly organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
In their address, the speakers observed that infrastructure and institutional preparedness for industrial safety are still at a nascent stage in the country, particularly when it comes to building safety, occupational safety and health and environmental sustainability.
In his welcome remarks, CPD Research Director Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem emphasized the need to ensure a safety culture in industries across Bangladesh.
He said with in line with the growing industry, the risk of security is becoming a concern. Despite Bangladesh’s continuous progress, there is lack of coordination among regulatory bodies when focus should be brought to safety.
ILO Country Director in Bangladesh Tuomo Poutiainen said ensuring safety and security for industries including the RMGs is the order of the day which should gain momentum.
“At the end of the day, we need better governance and favourable environment,” he pointed out.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun attended the forum as the chief guest.
He noted that Bangladesh is improving in term of safety and security, but this needs to be in an organised way.
“The government is focusing on creating EPZs to bring about an industrial revolution, and there are challenges that will be overcome,” argued the minister.
Speaking as a guest of honour, Ardashir Kabir, president of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation, commended the forum, saying this will help create synergy to work together for the common cause of raising industrial safety standards.
