UGC clears Tk 10,444cr budget for 51 public universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday approved a budget of Tk 10,444.04 crore for 51 public universities for the upcoming fiscal year 2022-23.

The fresh budget has witnessed an increase of Tk 937.80 crore compared to the revised budget of the current fiscal year, said the commission in a statement.

The new budget includes a revenue budget of Tk 6,023.60 crore and a development budget of Tk 4,420.44 crore in favour of 40 projects.

Tk 150 crore has been allocated in the budget for the research work of UGC and public universities, while the allocation was Tk 118 crore in the current fiscal year.

The UGC also approved a separate budget of Tk 71.67 crore for the commission in FY23.

The UGC approved the budget at its 162nd meeting of full commission with chairman (in-charge) Prof Dil Afroza Begum in the chair.

In FY22, the amount of allocation in the revised budget for 50 public universities was Tk 9,577.91 crore, the statement said.

Last year, the commission approved a budget of Tk 10,032 crore for the public universities. Of the amount, the size of the revenue budget was Tk 5,875 crore and the development budget was Tk 4,157 crore.

For the FY23 budget, Dhaka University, like previous years, got the highest allocation of Tk 864.94 crore. Sheikh Hasina Medical University in Khulna got the lowest allocation of Tk 3.83 crore.

UGC member Prof Abu Taher presented details at the meeting regarding the upcoming budget of FY23 and revised budget of FY22.
