The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formulated a guideline in a bid to ensure skill-based education in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector at the undergraduate level in the country’s universities.

A seven-membered committee led by UGC member Prof. Md Sazzad Hossain formulated the guideline and handed it over to the UGC Acting Chairman Prof Dil Afroza Begum at an event on Wednesday.

The UGC authorities told The Business Post that the guideline will be proved foundational in updating the curriculum on Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Information and Communication Engineering (ICE), and ICT-related academic subjects at the local universities.

The guideline was developed in collaboration with the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), UGC sources mentioned.

UGC authorities further mentioned that they are working jointly with BCC and JICA to create employment for at least 10,000 Bangladeshi information technology (IT) engineers in Japan. In addition to that, they are working collaboratively to encourage skill development for IT engineers.

The guideline will serve as a benchmark in the modernization of information technology-based education in the country, said UGC acting chairman Prof Dil Afroza Begum, adding that UGC will provide necessary advice to the local universities to implement the policy.

“There is no alternative to expanding skill-based education to gain a competitive advantage in the global labor market and if the education curriculum gets updated in coherence with the guideline local graduates will benefit greatly,” said UGC member Prof Sazzad Hossain.
