The Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI) has emphasized the importance of skilled and trained professionals in trade negotiations.

To that end, BFTI is preparing to launch a Post Graduate Diploma Program in International Trade in collaboration with BRAC University.

Panellists made the observations while addressing a 3-day-long training on agriculture negotiation at the conference room of BFTI on Sunday.

The event was arranged in collaboration with the WTO Cell of the Commerce Ministry under the Export Diversification and Competitiveness Development Project.

Hafizur Rahman, director general (additional secretary), WTO Cell, Ministry of Commerce, inaugurated the session and attended the program as the chief guest, while BFTI CEO Jafar Uddin chaired the session.

Hafizur Rahman stressed the need for skilled and trained people in the trade negotiations in Bangladesh.

He went on to say that the training program would help Bangladesh develop a pool of trade negotiators, which, for instance, could be useful in WTO agriculture talks.

BFTI CEO Jafar Uddin thanked the WTO Cell for arranging such a training program in association with BFTI.

He further expected that such programs would create skilled and trained trade professionals for trade negotiations through a series of training and certification.

He also added that BFTI is going to launch a Post Graduate Diploma in International Trade in association with BRAC University very soon to enhance its capacity in trade.

In his welcome speech, BFTI Director Obaidul Azam emphasized the importance of trade negotiation and greeted the participants for taking part in the training.

Representatives from the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Export Promotion Bureau, Department of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries, Department of Livestock Services, Competition Commission, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Sajeeb Group participated in the training program, among others.
