The Chittagong Customs House has seized a consignment of 19 tonnes of banned Sodium Cyclamate (Condensed Sugar) that arrived at the Chittagong port in the name of Soda Ash Light.
The consignment was imported by DSS Enterprise of Bangshal area in Dhaka, said Salauddin Rizvi, deputy commissioner of the Customs House.
Condensed Sugar is 50 times sweeter than regular sugar, which is one of the leading causes of cancer, he said, adding that the process to take legal action was underway. According to the sources, the container of the consignment arrived at Chittagong port on May 18 via MV HR Hera from China. Under the Port Control Unit (PCU) Risk Management Analysis of Custom House Chittagong, the Bill of Loading was blocked in NBR’s Asaikuda World System.
As the importer had not started the process of unloading the consignment on Wednesday (May 25) with the help of Custom House’s Audit Investigation and Research (AIR) team, the container was forcibly shifted to special areas.
A physical examination of the consignment was carried out on Wednesday and condensed sugar was found hidden inside it. After informing the senior officials, 19 tons of imported sugar and one ton of soda ash were seized.
