Nitrogen efficiency low in Bangladesh: Razzaque

Nitrogen efficiency is very low in Bangladesh ranging from 30 to 35 per cent, says Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque.

The minister made this remark at a sub-regional workshop on ‘South Asia Nitrogen Framework Policy’ organized by South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme at a hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Some 60-70 per cent nitrogen gets wasted in Bangladesh. In this circumstance, cooperation among South Asian countries is important, the minister said.

Agriculture is the main means of livelihood in South Asian countries. For these countries, Nitrogen management is important to produce crops and to protect environment from pollution.

A collective and cooperative drive is needed for sustainable environment and food security to move towards sustainable nitrogen management, he observed.

Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Nepal presented their respective national reports on Nitrogen pollution situation and management policy.
