ACC opens inquiry into Ex-Gazipur mayor Jahangir

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry into corruption allegations against former Gazipur City Corporation mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam.

A two-member team headed by ACC Deputy Director Nargis Sultana would conduct the inquiry, said the commission’s Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain.

Jahangir faces allegations of embezzling a lot of money from various development projects through irregularities and making suspicious bank transactions.

On November 25 last year, he was suspended from his mayoral post over various allegations against him.

The Awami League also fired him from his post of general secretary of the party’s Gazipur metropolitan unit following his controversial comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Liberation War martyrs.

The decision was made at a meeting of the party’s working committee on November 19 last year. Jahangir’s primary membership of the party was also cancelled.
