At least 333 workers were killed in 241 workplace accidents across the country in the first six months of the year.

But the number of deaths was 306 in 220 workplace accidents across the country in the first six months of 2021.

Safety and Rights Society (SRS), a non-governmental organization came up with the statistics through a survey conducted based on newspaper reports of 26 daily newspapers (15 national and 11 local newspapers) from 1 January to 30 June of 2022.

The report said it didn’t include deaths of workers outside the workplaces or in road accidents occurred back and forth.

According to a press release sent by SRS, the highest number of fatality of workers is at transport sector.

Of the accidents in 2022, a total of 138 transport workers were killed in road crashes.

Surprisingly, service sectors have the second highest number of deaths with 100 workers killed at workplaces like hotels, automobile servicing workshops and power supply sector.

Construction sector that generally causes huge deaths every year has come down to third place of fatality as 48 workers were killed in construction sites.

As many as 26 workers were killed in manufacturing sector (like garment, plastic factory, ship breaking, steel or re-rolling mill, etc) and 21 in the agriculture sector.

It found that 57 died in fire incidents, 25 workers died from electrocution, 23 died after being crushed by falling machinery or by heavy load or hard objects and 19 died after falling off heights.

Besides, 15 workers died from lightning. 15 workers in explosions, 9 in building, wall or roof collapses and 9 were suffocated to death by inhaling poisonous gas inside septic or water tanks.

The rest of the 8 workers died of drowning.

Executive Director of SRS, Sekender Ali Mina, said road accidents remained the leading cause of death.

He urged the transport sector authorities to ensure safety for the workers and strengthen their surveillance mechanism otherwise accidents would continue to increase.
