Edible oil prices still high

The price of edible oil has not come down in the retail market despite the announcement to reduce Tk 6 per litre.

On the contrary, some vendors are charging an extra Tk 5 per litre saying that they are still selling at the previous price as they have yet to receive newly priced oil from companies.

Besides, prices of vegetables and spices have gone up this week. Prices of vegetables have gone up by Tk 5-10 per kg compared to the prices of previous week. Vendors say floods and rains in different parts of the country have reduced the supply of goods. So the prices have gone up a bit.

According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the prices of 50 products have changed in the last one week. Among them, prices of 28 types of products including medium-quality rice, edible oil, lentil, onion, garlic, cardamom and cinnamon have gone up by 21 per cent. On the other hand, prices of 22 products including mugdal, dried chilli, egg and sugar have come down.

On Thursday, a single litre bottle of soybean oil was selling for Tk 205-210. Besides, unbottled soybean oil was being sold at Tk 185-186 per litre. Unbottled palm oil was being sold at Tk 160-161 per litre.

The Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspati Manufacturers Association has announced a reduction in the price of edible oil from last Monday. The association has reduced the price of one litre of unbottled soybean oil by Tk 5 to Tk 160. The price of one litre bottled soybean oil was reduced by Tk 6 to Tk 199 and five litre bottled soybean oil was reduced by Tk 17 to Tk 980.

The new price was set as oil prices continued to fall in the international market. However, the new price has not been effective in the last four days. Besides, the price of medium-quality lentil pulse has been increased by another Tk 5 per kg and is being sold at Tk 120-125.

The price of rice did not come down although the government has already taken steps to allow rice imports to control prices. Food ministry officials said approval will be given to import 1.5 million tonnes of rice this time.

In the last one week, the price of fine rice has gone up by Tk 2-3 per kg to Tk 80. Besides, the price of Miniket rice is also increasing at almost the same rate and is being sold at a price of Tk 72-73.

The price of onion has suddenly gone up by Tk 10-15 per kg though its price had decreased by Tk 5 per kg at the beginning of the week. On Thursday, it was being sold at Tk 50-55 per kg in the retail markets in Dhaka. The price of cumin has gone up by Tk 40 per kg and is being sold at Tk 480 per kg.
