Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) will jointly conduct drive to control Aedes mosquitoes after the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
DNCCI Mayor Atiqul Islam and REHAB President Alamgir Shamsul Alamin agreed to conduct the drive at a view exchange meeting in Dhaka on Monday as Aedes mosquitoes, carriers of dengue and chikungunya viruses, are found in water stored in under-construction buildings.
“We all must work together to control the spread of Aedes mosquitoes in the current monsoon. We have noticed that Aedes larvae are usually found in under-construction buildings. So, REHAB has to take responsibility in this regard and work in coordination with us,” Atiqul added.
The mayor also said REHAB should take effective measures to ensure that the under-construction buildings do not become a source of mosquitoes.
“Now, we find larvae in 3-4 per cent of buildings. The figure was 65-70 per cent before starting our awareness initiatives. We want to reduce the figure to zero,” Atiqul hoped.
He also added that they have started a drive using drones to search mosquito breeding sources on the roofs of houses in the capital.
“We want support from city dwellers to control the spread of mosquitoes and alert about it,” he also said.
Speaking at the meeting, Alamgir said the association will distribute free mosquito repellent Novaluron tablets among all their members before Eid.
“We will also conduct anti-mosquito awareness activities. Modern technology can be used to control the spread of mosquitoes,” he added.
REHAB Vice President (Finance) engineer Mohammad Sohel Rana and DNCC officials were also present at the meeting.
