Bangladesh’s Covid-19 cases surpass 2m mark

Overall Covid-19 cases in Bangladesh surpassed the two million mark on Thursday as the country recorded 884 new cases in the 24-hour period, pushing the total number of infections to 20,00,279.

The current positivity rate is 9.81 per cent, while the total positivity rate stands at 13.76 per cent, according to the daily update by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Six people died from Covid-19 in the 24-hour period till 8am on Thursday. With the new casualties, the death toll from this deadly virus reached 29,256 and the death rate stands at 1.46 per cent.

Besides, 1,602 patients recovered from the infection during this period, pushing the overall recovery to 19,31,494, says the DGHS report. Half of the detected cases of Covid-19 are Dhaka residents, numbering at 10,26,236.

According to DGHS officials, although most of the new patients are found in Dhaka city, they have noticed a significant lack of awareness among people all over the country over the past few days. The good news is, despite the increase in infections, the number of patients coming to the hospital is very low, said a number of healthcare professionals, adding that the patients are receiving treatment from home without any hassles.

Dr Mohammad Robed Amin, line director at the Non-Communicable Disease Control under the DGHS, said, “Covid-19 cases are rising in different countries because of a new sub-variant of Omicron. However, we are still in a good position now.”

“I recommend following the hygiene rules such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and avoiding all types of gatherings. Besides, people must take vaccines as soon as possible,” he added.

Bangladesh reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8 in 2020 and posted the first death 10 days later.
