Late monsoon rain disrupts life in Dhaka

A bout of heavy rain lashed the capital city on Monday afternoon triggering water-logging in many areas and causing suffering to commuters, including students.

Streets in parts of the city, including Mouchak, Bijay Sarani and Kakrail, went under water disrupting vehicle movement.

Caught in the sudden rain many were seen wading through water for lack of vehicles. Some opened their umbrellas, while others took shelter in open spaces under flyovers.

In Mouchak and Siddheshwari areas, many school and college students ventured into the streets braving the downpour and got soaked.

Traffic movements on the Mirpur Road from the Dhaka City College point, Green Road, Elenbari, Mohakhali, Farmgate, Gulshan, Nikunja, Kalyanpur and some other places were partially halted and remained very slow due to waterlogging.

The Met office recorded one millimetre of rainfall in the capital until 3:00pm, said meteorologist Afroza Sultana.

The north-eastern Sylhet, meanwhile, experienced heavy rains with the weather office recording 124mm of rainfall in the district alone from 6:00am to 12 noon Monday.

Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate elsewhere over the north Bay, said a Met office bulletin.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely at many places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country, it said.

Rainfall activity may decrease in the next three days, it added.

The highest temperature was recorded at 35.4 degrees Celsius in Jashore, while the lowest temperature was recorded at 23.5 degrees Celsius in Rajarhat of Kurigram.
