The government is planning to build a new sewage treatment plant (STP) in the Rayerbazar area to ensure a hygienic, environment-friendly and sustainable sanitation system in Dhaka city.

The Local Government Division has taken a project, titled “Land Acquisition for the Construction of Sewage Treatment Plant at Rayerbazar,” for this and sent the plan to the Planning Commission for clearance, a senior official of the Planning Ministry told The Business Post.

The project proposal is likely to be placed at the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval, he said.

According to the project proposal, the acquisition of 56 acres of land will be needed to build the STP.

Once implemented, the plant will ensure a sustainable sanitation system in Rayerbazar, Hazaribagh, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Bosila, Kalyanpur, Shyamoli, Gabtoli and adjoining areas under Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

The cost of the project, which will be implemented by Dhaka WASA by December 2024, is estimated at Tk 1,780 crore.

The STP’s modern sewerage system will benefit about 4 million people directly and indirectly once it becomes operational.

According to Dhaka WASA’s 2015-16 annual report, the city’s sewerage system includes 930 kilometres of underground sewage lines, 26 sewage lift stations and an STP in the Pagla area.

Under WASA’s master plan, the entire metropolis has been divided into 11 sanitation areas, including Dasherkandi, Mirpur, Rayerbazar, Pagla, Uttara, Narayanganj, Savar, Tongi, Gazipur and Keraniganj. STPs will be built in each of these areas by 2030.

Satyajit Karmaker, a member of the Planning Commission’s Physical Infrastructure Division, said the new project will help ensure proper sanitation around the capital.

After the land acquisition is complete, the government will take a separate project to build the STP at Rayerbazar, he added.

Dhaka WASA has been able to ensure a proper sewerage system in only 30 per cent of areas of the capital. Although there is 3,500 km of water supply pipelines in the city, there is only 100 km of sewage lines.

Around 70 per cent of the city’s areas do not have a sanitation sewerage system and that is causing various health and environment-related problems.
