BGMEA, IFC collab continues for RMG sector development

Members of International Finance Corporation led Advisory Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PaCT) made a call on BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at his office on Sunday.

PaCT Program Manager Nishat Chowdhury and Bangladesh PaCT Consultant – Resource Efficiency Nishat Nahrin Hamid, as well as BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim, directors Asif Ashraf and Barrister Vidiya Amrit Khan were present at the meeting.

They held discussions about the activities and progress of the ongoing projects which are being implemented by BGMEA with the financial support of IFC for the development of the RMG industry.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan thanked IFC for its continued support to the RMG industry in the past few decades, particularly the “Partnership for Cleaner Textile: PaCT” program which has supported participating factories in reducing the carbon footprint and water footprint.

Participants of the meeting expressed high optimism about continued collaboration in supporting the RMG industry of Bangladesh in the areas of sustainability and capacity enhancement to enable the sector to meet future challenges and realise untapped opportunities.

They also talked about how IFC could support the Center of Innovation, Efficiency and OSH established by BGMEA to develop capacity of the industry and enhance its competitiveness in the global market.

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, has already funded several studies for the RMG sector to explore its opportunities and ways to realise them.

IFC led Advisory Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PaCT) is a holistic program that support the entire textile value chain – spinning, weaving, wet processing and garment factories in adopting Cleaner Production (CP) practices and engages with brands, technology suppliers, industrial associations, financial institutions, government to bring about systemic and positive environmental change for the Bangladesh textile sector and contribute to the sector’s long-term competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
