The country has now 25,40,897 permanent establishments of wholesale and retail traders, creating employment for 91,95,421 people, according to a survey report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
According to the survey, the number of wholesale establishments in the country has increased by almost four times in the last decade while the number of retail establishments has decreased.
The number of wholesale business establishments is 6,84,038 while the number of retail establishments is 15,39,450, said the recently disclosed BBS survey report titled ‘Wholesale and Retail Trade Survey 2021’.
The BBS conducted the last survey on the same issue in 2009 where they included both permanent and temporary establishments.
According to the 2009 survey, the number of establishments was higher than in 2021. At that time there were 26,50,124 wholesale and retail business establishments in the country, including temporary establishments. However, the survey report did not mention the number of these temporary businesses.
Among the workers of the business establishments, 2,03,191 are female workers while the rest 89,92,230 are male. Each establishment employs 3 to 20 people. Organisations with three employees are the most, the survey said.
The establishments have various types of staff including managers, clerks and sales representatives. There are also unpaid workers from the owner’s family in this sector, the survey said, adding that there are sole proprietorship, partnership, and public and private limited types of organisations in this sector.
According to the survey data, an average of 3.62 people is working in each organisation in 2021 while an average of 1.99 people worked in 2009-10.
