The government has decided to import 500 MW electricity from hydraulic power plant of Nepal, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday.

The minister confirmed the matter after a meeting with Ghanshyam Bhandari, Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh at the secretariat while senior officials of the Commerce Ministry were present.

On the contrary, Bangladesh has been exporting readymade garments, food, paper, jute-made products, medicine, electronics and plastic products to Nepal, he said.

Improving connectivity would effectively explore more possibilities for bilateral trade expansion between Bangladesh and Nepal, Munshi said, adding that, commerce between the two countries is following a positive trend.

“Although the two neighbouring countries have bilateral trade of less than 1 billion but it may grow massively with positive initiatives.” the minister said.

New commercial prospects will be introduced by launching direct transportation system between Nepal and Bangladesh, he hoped.

Bangladesh exported goods of $68 million to Nepal while imported products of $4.80 million in the fiscal year 2021-22.

Meanwhile, Ghanshyam Bhandari said that Nepal has been working on Bangladesh’s proposal to sign Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). Trade and commerce between the countries will expand further in the upcoming days, he hoped.

Interests of traders can be raised positively by forming Bangladesh-Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bhandari suggested.

A large number of Bangladeshi tourists visit Nepal every year; that will get a fresh dimension by launching of direct road transportation with Nepal, the ambassador said.

Direct transportation will also make commerce easy and profitable through Mongla, Banglabandha and Benapole ports and utilise positive outcomes of Padma Bridge, he added.

Nepal has least proficiency in the international; it will expand due to easy taxation of products for the transit facility, Bhandari said.
