2 Munshiganj upazilas to get intelligent transport system

The government has planned to introduce an intelligent transport system (ITS), which will cover 40 kilometres of roads in Keraniganj and Srinagar upazilas of Munshiganj, to improve road safety.

The Road Transport and Highways Division has undertaken a project in this regard.

The project aims to install an electronic control management system at the headquarters of the Roads and Highways Department to monitor the movement of vehicles, a senior official of the Planning Commission said.

“Once the project is implemented, an efficient road network system will be established through the ITS that is time- and energy-efficient, and traffic jam- and pollution-free. The system will also reduce accidents," he said.

Under the project, a road master plan will be formulated by analysing the existing laws and regulations in the country.

Along with the country's road network, the volume and speed of vehicles on roads have increased significantly, resulting in a rise in road accidents, according to the project proposal.

The ITS will be installed experimentally from Mayor Hanif flyover to the Padma Bridge. If that succeeds, the project will be implemented all over the country, the proposal also said.

The cost of the project titled “Improving the Reliability and Safety on National Highways Corridors of Bangladesh by Introduction of Intelligent Transport System (ITS)” is estimated at Tk 122.03 crore.

Of this, Tk 38.83 crore will come from the government exchequer while Korea International Cooperation Agency will give Tk 83.2 crore.

The project’s tenure is between 2022 and June 2026. The executive committee of the national economic council approved it recently.

The main component of the project is installing a 50km optical fibre network, setting up a 250-square-metre traffic management centre, preparing the ITS master plan, installing CCTV cameras or speed enforcement cameras or variable message signs, installing vehicle detection systems, and manpower training in ITS implementation.
