Biman eyes curbing irregularities, losses

Biman Bangladesh Airlines has taken various measures including introducing dynamic pricing policy and achieving on time performance (OTP) to prevent irregularities and losses in the national flag carrier, said state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Mahbub Ali on Wednesday.

In reply to a query from Jatiya Party MP Nasrin Jahan Ratna he said that earlier Biman had to incur huge losses as price of ticket of the national airlines was not compatible with the international market.

“Due to the introduction of dynamic pricing policy, it was possible to strictly monitor the process of fixing the price of ticket causing increase in Biman’s revenue,” the state minister said.

He also said sales cost of air ticket was reduced from 14 per cent to 12 per cent through international inspection, control and audit.

The state minister said world standard OTP has been achieved and process is going on to continue this achievement. At present Biman has achieved 80 per cent OTP, he added.

The state minister also said Biman has taken measures to improve quality of passenger services.

“Biman has reduced the average time of delivering luggage to 45 minutes through efficient ground handling. The national airliner is working to bring down the average time of delivering luggage handling to 30 minutes,” he also said.

The state minister said Biman has purchased GSE equipment worth Tk 45 crore this year to increase capacity in luggage handling.

“Different types of equipment worth Tk 80 crore will be added soon,” he also said adding, “Process to purchase GSE equipment worth Tk 113 crore will be completed by June 2023.”

The state minister said activities to launch flights on different profitable routes including Male and Narita is going on.

In reply to another query, Mahbub Ali said the government has a plan to upgrade the Barishal domestic airport to an international one.
