The health ministry has suspended the operating license of Care Medical College in the capital with immediate effect.
The ministry, however, is yet to fix an institute for the continuation of studies of current MBBS students of the college, said a gazette notification issued by the ministry on Wednesday.
According to the gazette, the decision came after Professor Dr Parveen Fatima, chairman of the private medical college, expressed their incapability to continue the operation of the college in a meeting with health ministry officials on October 10 last.
Saiful Hassan Badal, secretary to the health ministry’s medical education and family welfare division, presided over the meeting.
According to the gazette, earlier in 2016, the health ministry suspended admission and educational activities of the college after it failed to fulfil the conditions set by Private Medical College Establishment and Operation Guidelines-2011.
The college authorities then filed a writ petition with the High Court and continued their academic activities till 2020-2021. They, however, did not admit any student to the college in the 2021-2022 academic year.
On June 14 this year, a team from the Health Education Directorate inspected the private medical college and found no improvement in its management.
The inspection found that in these five years (2017-2022) the college authorities failed to improve the quality of education and increase the number of teachers required as per the guidelines.
Having no building of its own, the college authorities run the academic activities and hospital in separate buildings. These all have breached the guidelines amended in 2022, said the gazette.
So, considering the welfare of the current student, the health education division sat with the college authorities on October 10, the gazette clarified.
Contacted, Nitish Chandra Sarkar, additional secretary to the medical education wing, could not say how many students are currently studying in the college.
