Around 19 lakh taxpayers submit income tax till November 28

Around 19 lakh among the 82 lakh registered taxpayers of the country, have submitted their income tax this year till November 28.

The deadline for the tax return submission was today (November 30).

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is yet to extend the deadline, despite some associations have urged extension of the deadline considering the ongoing economic strain triggered by global headwinds.

Last year, a total of 25.48 lakh taxpayers submitted their income tax. The board is likely to extend the deadline by one more month to increase income from tax returns like the previous year.

Besides, the NBR will also observe the ‘National Income Tax Day’ today across the country aiming to enhance awareness among people regarding the submission of income tax regularly.

To observe the day, the NBR will hold a seminar at its head office in Shegunbagicha. The programme will begin with freeing pigeons at 10:30am where Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh, Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, will be present as the chief guest.

Meanwhile, President Mohammad Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have issued separate messages on the occasion, wishing success of the day and greeted all officials and employees of the NBR and tax-paying individuals and companies marking the income tax day.

The tax authority is currently observing ‘Tax Service Month’ to facilitate taxpayers to file their tax returns timely for the year 2022-23 and the initiative will end today.

However, the different tax payers and the Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA) have urged the NBR to extend the duration of tax return submission by two more months for the tax year 2022-23, without charging any penalty over delay.

Currently, return submission is mandatory for getting many essential services. According to the Finance Act, 2022, a person is required to furnish a proof of submission of tax return in the cases of applying for a loan exceeding Tk5 lakh from any banks or financial institutions; becoming director or sponsor shareholder of any company; obtaining or continuing import registration certificate or export registration certificate; obtaining or renewing trade licence in the area of city corporations or paurashavas.

It is also mandatory for obtaining registration of co-operative society; obtaining or renewing license or enlisting as a surveyor of general insurance; obtaining or maintaining credit card; obtaining or continuing electricity connection in city corporations or cantonment boards and so forth all sorts of important cases in daily life.
