‘BPC lost Tk9,000cr in 10 months’

Chairman of the state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) ABM Azad said on Tuesday the corporation had incurred losses of up to Tk 9,000 crore between February and November this year.

“BPC made profits from all types of fuel, except for diesel,” he said at a press conference at the BPC office in the capital. The press briefing was arranged concerning the recent sinking of an oil tanker in Bhola. A lighter with 11 lakh litres of fuel sank after being hit by another vessel in the Meghna River due to dense fog early Sunday.

The accident took place due to poor visibility caused by the fog. All the fuel spilled into the river. Local people later collected the fuel in containers. Fortunately, all 13 crew members of the vessel were rescued by another vessel passing through the area.

BPC hiked fuel prices by 42 per cent on average on August 5 this year. Fuel prices have been decreasing for the last three months in the global market. Despite that, BPC says it has faced losses.
