At least 11 students of Dhaka University were injured in a clash over the final game of an inter-departmental cricket tournament on Monday.
According to witnesses, students of the Department of Marketing and the Institute of Social Welfare and Research got into a clash following a heated confrontation on Monday evening at the university’s central playground.
In total, seven students from the Institute of Social Welfare and Research and four from the Department of Marketing suffered injuries in the fight. They have received emergency care at the Mohammad Mortaza Medical Center.
Among the injured, Nazmus Saqib, Jim Nazmul, Moshiur Rahman, Mehdi Hasan, Minhajul Islam, Ayan Samaddar and Mamun Reza have been identified as students of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research. Also, Delwar Hossain, Zulfikar Mahmud, Imtiaz Hossain, and Araf Mahmud have been identified as students of the marketing department.
Witnesses said Both sides quarrelled amid uncontrollable tension in the final game. At one stage of the conversation, it turned into a clash.
Later, DU AKM Golam Rabbani and the Proctoral Mobile Team reached the spot and brought the incident under control, and made arrangements to take the injured to the hospital.
An eyewitness on the condition of anonymity said, “Batting first, the Social Welfare and Research Institute team left the field with a target of 149 runs. Later, in 9 overs, the marketing department team scored 72 for one wicket.
“An argument broke out when a wicket fell but the batsman refused to leave the field. At one point, the argument turned into a confrontation. Later, the teachers suspended the game.”
Meanwhile, students of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research complained that the marketing department students started misbehaving from the beginning of the game. When seniors wanted to resolve, they initiated the fight.
However, the students of the marketing department blamed social welfare students. They complained that the social welfare students had behaved badly from the start.
DU Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said, “Sports are our educational activities. We always strive to organise the sport in a methodical manner, but today an unexpected incident took place.
