Crisis in LC opening: BB rejects media reports

Rejecting media reports on the crisis in LC opening, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director Md Mezbaul Haque on Thursday said adequate LC has been opened to import necessary goods for the holy month of Ramadan.

“Enough LC has been opened in January this year ahead of the holy month of Ramadan compared to last year. But traders are making complaints to the media about complexity in LC opening. These allegations are baseless,” Mezbaul Haque, also the spokesperson for the central bank, told a press conference held at the auditorium of Bangladesh Bank in the capital.

The country will face no shortage of goods in Ramadan if transportation and supplies remain smooth, he added.

According to the central bank data, LC was opened to import a total of 565,941.24 tonnes of sugar in January 2023, but the figure was 511,492.84 tonnes in January last year. Besides, LC was opened to import 390,853.11 tonnes of edible oil this January which was 352,959.99 tonnes during the same period of last year.

The data also showed that LC was opened to import 224,566.81 tonnes of peas in January this year while the figure was 265,596 tonnes in the previous corresponding period.

And, LC was opened to import 42,562.81 tonnes of onion this January which was 36,225.85 tonnes in January last year. LC was opened to import 29,481.63 tonnes of date in January this year which was 16,498.24 tonnes in the last corresponding period.

On Thursday, The Business Post published a report headlined, “LC opening hurdles put industries in troubled waters.”

Mezbaul also pointed out that they arranged the press conference to give a message of relief on overall import of goods.
