Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal on Thursday said that climate change has turned into a major concern impacting the overall public health and the country needs elaborated research to combat climate change.

“Climate change and public health is interrelated and timely issue considering the diverse effect on the society. People have to face different health related problems, their efficiency decreases and the country’s production capacity reduces due to climate change,” he said while presiding over a workshop at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on DU campus.

“We need to focus on elaborate research on climate change and public health to make the country’s development more sustainable,” he added.

The workshop, titled “Development of the contents for the short course on climate change and public health”, was jointly organised by Dhaka University’s Disaster Science and Climate Resilience Department and climate change and health promotion unit under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Syed Mojibul Huq, additional secretary (public health) to the health ministry, was the chief guest at the workshop.

Dr Md Zillur Rahman, dean of the faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of DU and director of Climate Change and Health Promotion Unit (CCHPU) also addressed the workshop.
