Shahab seeks cooperation of all to check sound pollution

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin on Thursday said unbearable noise has adverse effects on human health and the environment, so cooperation from all is needed to prevent sound pollution.

“...we have to stop creating loud sounds. Drivers should stop playing horns unnecessarily while driving. High noise should be avoided in factories and construction work,” he said.

“Hopefully, in the future, people will realise the harmful impacts of noise pollution and change their behaviour,” the minister told a workshop in Dhaka.

The Department of Environment (DoE) arranged the validation workshop of the sound quality measurement survey conducted in 64 districts under a project to check sound pollution, according to a press release.

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin said various effective measures are being taken and implemented under the integrated and partnership project to control sound pollution.

Under the project, he said, the survey has been conducted to determine the noise level in 64 districts across the country and the survey report will be published and then the noise pollution control rules will be amended accordingly.

“Cooperation from BRTA [Bangladesh Road Transport Authority] and Bangladesh Police is needed to check noise pollution. We all need to work together to control sound pollution,” the minister added.

Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar, Secretary Farhina Ahmed, BRTA Chairman Nur Mohammad Mazumder, Dhaka Medical College Hospital Associate Professor (ENT) Dr Husne Qamar Osmani, and Dean of Law Faculty at Dhaka University Shima Zaman, among others, spoke at the workshop with DoE Director General Abdul Hamid in the chair.
