Customs House in Chittagong has urged the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to take necessary steps to collect Tk 34.21 crore outstanding customs duties and value-added tax from Bangladesh Police.

In a recent letter to the NBR, the customs house said Bangladesh Police owes it the amount as outstanding duty for importing Toyota vehicles from Japan on October 3, 2021.

The customs house sent a copy of the letter, signed by its commissioner Mohammad Fyzur Rahman and sent on February 20, to the Ministry of Home Affairs also.

“Bangladesh Police imported 20 units of Toyota vehicles and got delivery of the imported goods on condition of paying duties of the shipment within six months,” the letter read.

“The timeline of six months expired on May 5 last year but Bangladesh Police did not yet fully pay the outstanding duties,” it added.

“The total duties were Tk 72.11 crore against the consignment, but the law enforcement agency paid only Tk 37.90 crore on June 29 last year. The remaining Tk 34.21 crore duty is still due,” the letter said, adding that the customs house sent an urgent letter to the police urging them to pay the due duties.

In reply, the Police Head Quarters in a letter informed the customs authorities that they prepared a revised DPP and sent it to the Planning Commission through the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking allocation to pay the due customs duties and VAT on the import of vehicles.

“Project amendment proposal is currently awaiting approval of the planning commission. The Police headquarters will pay the outstanding customs duties and VAT after the project amendment proposal is approved,” the police said in the letter.
