The country’s prominent medical equipment producer Promixco Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) of India to facilitate the production of modern low-cost medical equipment.

Rakesh Bhatia, head of sales, service and maintenance at AMTZ, and Tipu Sultan, chief marketing officer of Promixco, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organisations at Promixco’s Topkhana Road office in the capital on Tuesday.

India’s first manufacturing hub for medical devices, AMTZ is a medical technology park established in Visakhapatnam on 270-acre land by the government of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh to produce high-end medical equipment.

Promixco officials said through this collaboration, Bangladeshi students and researchers will have the access to more innovative knowledge on modern medical technology.

At the event, Rakesh Bhatia said, “The collaboration has been possible as the two parties have been working to manufacture quality medical equipment and devices at a lower cost for a long time. Through AMTZ several Indian companies are producing thousands of medical devices. The park also has two incubation centres, Medtech centre and Biotech centre, with all sorts of research and testing facilities.”

“We want to establish such an incubation centre through Promixco in Bangladesh where the students and researchers with innovative ideas will get state-of-art facilities to learn about modern technologies,” he added.

Asked if they are collaborating with any of the universities or colleges providing medtech education in Bangladesh, he said “Through Kalam Institute, a component of AMTZ, we are providing facilities to the students from 14 medical colleges. If any medtech institute in Bangladesh wants, it can collaborate through Promixco.”

Ahmed Ali, special assistant to the managing director of Promixco, said, “Promixco is currently manufacturing over 100 medical equipment and devices. Now, we are collaborating with ATMZ to get technical and other support in the fields of research, innovation and development of products.”

The two organisations would collaborate in the fields of medtech, biotech, biomedical, training and research, in addition to helping each other in promoting products they are producing, said Promixco sources.

Informing that the government has recently recognized medical equipment manufacturing as an industry, Promixco Managing Director Mousumi Islam said, “Now the country needs skilled and efficient manpower and modern technologies to advance the sector. That is what the MoU can help the country to get.”

“We hope the MoU will bring success for the industry and also help the Indian counterpart for their further betterment,” she added.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, lawmaker and former minister Biren Sikder wished for the success of the MoU.

Senior Promixco officials and FBCCI members were also present at the event.
