Three salt farmers died at Moheshkhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday after becoming ill working in torrential rain.
Chairman Mir Kashem Chowdhury of Moheshkhali’s Hoanak union confirmed the deaths on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Ridwan, son of Abul Fazal of Kalagazi village, Muhammad Nesar, son of Aktar Kabir of Panirchhara village and Md Ansar, son of Matan of Panirchhara village.
Mir Kashem said, “Approximately 40-50 labourers went to the field at 10am on Sunday to recover the polyethene and salt. When 6/7 people fell ill due to catching cold after working in the rain for hours, they were rushed to Moheshkhali upazila health complex.”
One of them, Ridwan, was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at around 4:30pm. The rest were released after primary treatment.
On the other hand, Muhammad Nesar died in the salt field while he was trying to recover the polyethene. His body was found floating in the water at 10:30pm.
At the same time, Sona Miya, another farmer, was found in a dire state and was rescued. He is now undergoing treatment at the upazila health complex. Meanwhile, residents recovered another farmer Ansar’s body from the salt field at 11:30 pm.
