The government has decided to provide each of the migrant workers who were forced to return from the war-torn African country of Sudan with a maximum amount of Tk 50 lakh in loan.
Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry took the decision in a meeting held on Monday, a ministry press release said.
The maximum amount of loan will be given against collateral while Tk 5 lakh will be given against side collateral and Tk 3 lakh be lent without any collateral. The loans would be disbursed to those who are interested in trade and business by complying with the rules and regulations of the Bangladesh Bank.
The returnees will also be provided with entrepreneurship training and counselling free of cost to enhance their business skills.
Apart from the loan, the returnees who want to go overseas will also get assistance from the government.
Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL), the only government recruiting agency, will prioritise them in sending manpower to Jordan, South Korea and other suitable destinations.
“An information bank will be established in 15 days on the Sudan returnees. Officials from the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board/District Employment and Manpower Office will contact the returnees to make the database, said Imran Ahmed, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister.
Top officials from the Probashi Kallyan Bank, a specialised bank for helping expatriates, and officials from the Expatriates’ Ministry were present at the meeting.
Recently Sudan is engaged in a serious domestic war. Two groups from the country’s armed forces are fighting over taking state power. In such a situation, Bangladeshi migrants got stranded in the country and the government is bringing them back from Saudi Arabia through the Bangladesh Embassy.
More than 7 lakh Bangladeshi migrants returned from the country so far, said the Expatriates’ Welfare Ministry of Bangladesh on Monday.
