Unrest at Monipur school over principal’s post

Teachers of the Monipur School and College on Thursday demonstrated over the appointment of a new principal at the institution’s campus in the capital.

Sources said the school’s ad-hoc managing committee President AKM Delwar Hossain on Wednesday appointed Assistant Teacher Akhlaq Hossain as the acting principal, relieving current acting principal Zakir Hossain from duty.

Terming Akhlaq’s appointment illegal, most of the school’s teachers boycotted classes on Thursday and demonstrated on the school campus in support of Zakir.

The teachers alleged that the pro-committee teachers and some outsiders occupied the main campus on Wednesday after Akhlaq’s appointment.

The two sides also reportedly clashed at the school on Wednesday night. Later, police were deployed there to avoid further untoward incidents.

Opposing the committee notice, Zakir has given a counter notice to the teachers urging them to stay united and do their duty without heeding the committee’s decision.

Zakir said, “The Education Ministry has appointed me as the school’s principal following the High Court’s order. So only the ministry can discharge me, no one else. I will do whatever it takes to maintain the school environment.”

Besides, the institution’s founder and State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder went to the girls’ campus of Monipur High School on Thursday, where he said he established the institution step by step. So, there will be no Jamaat-Shibir and anti-independence sympathisers in his school.

He also said that it was his decision to remove Zakir and assign responsibility to Akhlaq.
