To showcase Bangladesh's circular economic progress and share knowledge, the country will host the first “Bangladesh Circular Economy Summit” in Dhaka on Thursday.
The summit will start at 9am and end at 5:30pm at the Radisson Blu Water Garden Dhaka, said organisers.
Organised by Bangladesh Apparel Exchange in collaboration with Laudes Foundation and partnership with P4G, the event will be powered by GIZ, the Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh and H&M Group, according to a press release.
According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, there are 23 factories in the country that recycle used clothes and make yarn for use by export-oriented readymade garment factories.
The apex trade body says Bangladesh could earn an additional $5 billion annually by recycling domestic clothes waste. As the country’s major export destination, the European Union is going to execute due diligence and a circular economy and Bangladesh is also bound to adopt recycling technology.
That is why the country and its industries are concerned about the circular economy.
Bangladesh Apparel Exchange Founder and CEO Mostafiz Uddin said, “Circular economy is the alternative to a traditional economy which is linear, where you produce, consume and throw away.
“In a circular economy, you keep resources in use for as long as possible, and extract and harvest the maximum value from the products whilst in use.”
Bangladesh Circular Economy Summit aims to find opportunities for the shift from the linear to the circular business model and foster collaborations among the stakeholders to promote the circular economy in the country, he said.
The summit will have an opening plenary, four plenary sessions, three keynotes, three presentations, a roundtable and a fireside chat.
The plenary sessions will be on “The Bangladesh Economy - The Path Towards a Circular Economy,” “Circular Cities,” “Accelerating Circular Economy in Apparel and Textile - The Role of Policy,” and “Lessons Learnt and Next Steps for Post-Industrial Recycling in Bangladesh - Practical and Tangible Advice and Actions for Progress.”
The keynotes will be “Circular Economy Myth Busting: A Shared Understanding,” “Circular Economy in Bangladesh: Challenges and Opportunities,” and “Circular Business Models and Design for Apparel Industry in Bangladesh.”
The presentations will be on “Circularity Gap Report 2023,” “Blueprint for a Circular & Sustainable Future,” and “Promoting Circular Fashion in Bangladesh.”
The fireside chat will be on “Decent Work in a Circular Economy – How to Achieve a Just Transition.”
