Under the ‘Smart Bangladesh, Smart Haats’ slogan, eight temporary cattle markets of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) area will have a digital transaction system, said DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on Monday.

“These haats will be smart haats. We are slowly moving towards Smart Bangladesh. As part of this, all transactions will be done smartly”, he stated, at a press briefing titled “Smart Bangladesh Smart Haat” at Sheraton Dhaka in Banani area.

“We have arranged a cashless transaction system in the haats of sacrificial animals and already 10,000 farmers have opened bank accounts. So, we don’t have to go to the markets with money and cattle owners also won’t face any problems while returning home with cash as the transactions will be done digitally,” the mayor said.

Besides, establishment of another temporary cattle market is on the process which will be finalised within two or three days, he said, adding that, another permanent cattle market in Gaptoli will also be operated during this Eid.

He said, “In 2022, Bangladesh Bank took up the pilot programme of this initiative intending to introduce digital transactions in the cattle markets and financial inclusion of marginal animal sellers through personal retail accounts, where Tk 33 crore was transacted. This time our transaction target is Tk 150 crore.”

10 banks associated with DNCC cattle markets

AB Bank, Bank Asia, BRAC Bank, Eastern Bank, IFIC Bank PLC, Islami Bank Bangladesh, Mutual Trust Bank, Pubali Bank, City Bank and United Commercial Bank PLC, three international payment schemes (Amex, Master Card and Visa), four MFS providers (bKash, Nagad, Upay and mCash) will be associated with the digital transaction system.

The mayor said the banks and financial organisations will set up digital booths in the cattle markets for the sellers and buyers.

Animal waste will be removed in 8 hours

About sacrificial animal waste removal, Mayor Atiqul said that DNCC will try to remove the waste of sacrificial animals within 08 hours on the day of Eid-ul-Azha. He announced that he will be in the field along with the officials and employees engaged in removing the animal waste on Eid day.

“We have cancelled the leave of officials and employees who are involved in the removal of waste management. Besides, monitoring teams and committees have been formed for the proper management of waste disposal. We will have 11,000 workers in the field for waste removal,” said Atiqul.

He said, “We will distribute nine lakh biodegradable polybags to the city dwellers who will sacrifice the animal. They have to put sacrificial waste in those polybags and we will remove them.”

He also urged the citizens of DNCC not to put meat in those polybags or keep them in the fridge as the DNCC has arranged them for waste removal.

The press conference was also attended by the top of various organisations related to the matter.
