The health authorities for the first time recorded over 1,000 new dengue cases across the country this year on Saturday while another patient died of the illness on that day.

Of the 1,034 new patients, 589 were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and 445 outside it till Sunday morning, said a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The number of total deaths climbed to 113 with the latest one.

A total of 3,492 patients are now receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Of them, 2,286 are in the capital.

The tally of infected patients continues to grow as some 14,971 were admitted to hospitals this month. The number was 9,911 last month.

The number of deaths is also the highest in the current month, 58, which was 34 in the previous month. There were 11 deaths in August, nine in July, and one in June.

DGHS officials said three serotypes of the virus – Den-1, Den-3, and Den-4 – prevail more this year. Den-3 and Den-4 are found more in the capital, and Den-1 outside Dhaka.

Dhaka city recorded the highest number of cases, 22,013, this year. It also recorded the highest number of deaths, 67.

Cox’s Bazar registered the second highest number of deaths, 22, followed by Chattogram, 13, and Barishal, 5.

DGHS said shock syndrome among dengue patients is the dominant reason behind the increase in deaths this year. In 2019, dengue haemorrhage caused a huge number of deaths.

The health directorate has recorded 31,063 dengue cases and 27,458 recoveries so far this year.
