Living story of a dying river

The Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, is situated on the banks of the Buriganga River. The river is very important to Dhaka economically. The once mighty river, it has become severely polluted due to the gradual and indiscriminate dumping of human and industrial waste. It is now one of the most polluted rivers in the country. The pollution level is so high that it has killed all the fish species in the river. The increasing filth has turned the water black. The High Court in 2020 directed the Department of Environment to immediately shut down a total of 231 industries in Dhaka metropolitan area near the river to save the waterbody from pollution and illegal occupation
