UITS Board of Trustees Chairman Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman has said all can show real respect to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement by ensuring the use of Bangla in all branches of knowledge and science.

“And thus (by ensuring the practice) we can be proud as a nation,” said Mizanur Rahman, also the founder chairman of PHP Family, a leading Bangladeshi conglomerate, according to a UITS press release.

Sufi Mohamed Mizanur Rahman, who was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2020 for his vast contribution in social activism, was addressing a virtual discussion as the chief guest, marking ‘Shaheed Dibash’ (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day on Monday.

University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS), the first IT-based private university in Bangladesh, organised the discussion with Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammed Solaiman in the chair.

At the event, UITS Board of Trustees Advisor and Dhaka University’s AF Rahman Hall Provost Professor Dr KM Saiful Islam Khan, UITS pro-vice-chancellor (acting) Professor Dr Md Abu Hashan Bhuiyan, Treasurer Professor Dr Siraj Uddin Ahmed, Controller of Examinations Professor ANM Shareef,  Faculty of Law Dean Dr Md Abdul Mannan Bhuyean, and Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Dean Syeda Afsana Ferdousi highlighted the importance and significance of use of the mother tongue and the Language Movement in 1952.

UITS Registrar Mohammad Kamrul Hasan moderated the discussion where the university proctor, heads of departments, students’ welfare advisor, teachers, officials, staff and students were also present.

Earlier, the university led by its pro-vice-chancellor paid homage to the Language Movement martyrs by placing a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka in the early hours of Monday.

The treasurer, registrar, proctor, public relations officer, teachers, students, among others, were present on the occasion.

Besides, various programmes were held on the university’s own campus as a mark of respect to the Language Movement martyrs.
