Waste-to-energy initiative in the offing: Tazul

Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam on Sunday said his government has taken initiative to generate electricity from waste collected from city corporations, municipalities, districts and upazilas across the country.

He said this at programme titled, “Solid Waste Management Information Sharing” at the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in the capital yesterday.

“We have already started generating electricity from waste in Dhaka South and North City Corporations, and Gazipur, Chattogram and Narayanj areas. Gradually, we will collect waste from all areas up to upazila level to generate power,” added the minister.

Tazul urged the city authorities to take proper measurers, so general people don’t have to suffer due to stench spread from waste of secondary transfer station (STS).

“There is a lot of stench in the STS. This causes problems for pedestrians and people living in the areas. I would like to give instructions to the individuals concerned to review whether the stench is spreading and whether there is a scope for alternative system,” he pointed out.

“The government is working on how to bring all remote villages alongside the cities under a proper waste management system.”

The amount of waste multiplied manyfold due to increase in economic capacity of people in the country. It is a common issue that waste will increase if population goes up in a country.”

Tazul said waste is a big challenge in all countries across the globe; therefore, it is important to bring waste under a proper management.

Bangladesh follows the method of developed countries as to how to produce electricity through waste, stated the junior minister.

“We request all not to hurl waste in river, lake, canal and drain. All wastes particularly households, industries, construction, and medical wastes are harmful to humans. However, we want to bring a revolution in the waste management system,” added the minister.

He informed the seminar that around 3,000 metric tonnes of waste come from Dhaka North and South City Corporations daily, 2,500 MT from Chattogram, 2000 MT from Gazipur, and a lot of wastes from Narayanganj. These wastes will generate electricity soon.

Deputy Team leader of JICA SWM Project Kudo Yuriko presented the keynote paper on new clean Dhaka master plan and JICA’s technical assistance to this end while the deputy director (waste and chemicals management) of the Department of Environment presented another keynote paper on Solid Waste Management Regulation-2021 there.

Speaking as a special guest at the event, Japan Ambassador to Bangladesh ITO Naoki said Japan is keen to provide all necessary supports to Bangladesh for proper waste management as Japan has a lot of equipment for technical assistance.

“A better waste management system will support Bangladesh to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). We hope the new Dhaka master plan will succeed as we continue support here,” he added.

Additional Secretary to UD at LGRD Mustakim Billah Faruqui gave welcome speech at the event while LGRD Senior Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and different government staff also spoke at the function.
