A case has been filed against around 300 people, including 47 leaders and activists of BNP and Chhatra Dal as named accused, and 200-250 unnamed ones, over a clash with police at National Press Club on Sunday.
Police filed the case on early Monday with Shahbagh police station early Monday, confirmed Mohammad Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge of the police station.
12 people so far have been arrested in the case on charges of attempt to murder, attack and vandalism, he said.
At least 50 people were injured in a clash on Sunday morning between members of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and police at the National Press Club in the capital.
The incident occurred when leaders and activists od Chhatra Dal gathered in front of the Press Club around 11 in the morning to stage a protest over issues including the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in custody and the decision to remove BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s gallantry title ‘Bir Uttam’.
Police, however, barred them from staging the demonstration saying they don’t have permission to hold a rally and a clash erupted at one point during an attempt of the police to disperse the gathered activists from the area.
According to police, they had to resort to charging batons and firing rubber bullets to bring the situation under control as protesters began to hurl stones and brickbats at them and attack them with sticks.
Some members of the police were also among the injured.
Later in the day, Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Sazzadur Rahman claimed this to be "a pre-planned attack on police members".
While talking to journalists, he said that DMP commissioner’s permission is needed to hold such a programme at any place in Dhaka city but JCD did not take any permission from DMP.
"Legal action will soon be taken," he added.
