Awami League nominated MP candidate Mohammad Ali Arafat won the Dhaka-17 by-election on Monday, bagging 28,816 votes, according to unofficial results of all the 124 centres.
His closest rival independent candidate Ashraful Alam, better known as “Hero Alam,” bagged 5,609 votes.
Senior District Election Officer Md Munir Hussain Khan, returning officer of the Dhaka-17 by-election, unofficially announced the results.
Among other candidates, Jatiya Party candidate Sikder Anisur Rahman (Plough) got 1,328 votes, Zaker Party candidate (Rose) Kazi Rashidul Hasan got 923 votes, Bangladesh Sangskritik Muktijote (Cane) candidate Akter Hossain bagged 64 votes, independent Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan (Truck) got 52 votes, Rezaul Karim Swapan of Bangladesh Congress (Green coconut) bagged 43 votes, and Trinamul BNP (Golden fibre) candidate Sheikh Habibur Rahman got 202 votes.
A total of 37, 420 voters cast their ballots in the by-polls.
The voting started at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break and it was monitored through 853 CCTVs.
Even though voter turnout was low, the by-election was held peacefully, said Mohammad Abed Ali, chairman of the Election Monitoring Forum (EMF).
However, Hero Alam was physically assaulted while leaving a polling centre in the Banani area.
Election Commissioner Mohammad Alamgir said action will be taken against those involved in physically assaulting the independent candidate.
"The Hero Alam incident is an injustice, and steps are underway to take action against those involved," the election commissioner said at a post-election briefing in front of journalists at the Election Commission building.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Ali Arafat condemned the attack on his rival candidate Hero Alam.
Election Commissioner Begum Rashida Sultana said the election environment was "good," and they did not notice any irregularity in the CCTV cameras.
