BNP's divisional rally began at Golapbagh ground in Dhaka city on Saturday morning with the presence of a large number of activists and leaders.

BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain attended the rally as the chief guest.

Among other leaders, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Joynal Abedin Faruq, Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel, Moazzem Hossain Alal and Mizanur Rahman Minu were present on the stage.

Chanting various slogans, BNP supporters thronged the Golapbagh ground to attend the rally.

Earlier, supporters of BNP started gathering at the venue on Friday afternoon soon after the party got permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to hold the much-talked-about rally at Golapbagh ground.

At night, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) also allowed BNP to hold the rally on condition that the party will be held liable for any structural damage caused to the venue during the rally.

Earlier, tensions were brewing over the BNP rally during the last few days as the authorities and opposition leaders failed to reach an agreement on the venue.

The authorities had initially permitted BNP to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, but party leaders wanted the venue to be in the Naya Paltan area.

The standoff led to a deadly clash between security forces and BNP supporters on Wednesday and resulted in the arrest of scores of party activists, including some of its top leaders.

However, the day before the rally, events took another dramatic turn with police arresting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas. They were arrested in connection with a case filed over the party’s clash with police at Naya Paltan on Wednesday.

Both leaders were picked up from their residences in the early hours of Friday.

Meanwhile, law enforcers have beefed up security across the capital ahead of the BNP rally.

Security forces are conducting an extensive search at different entry points to Dhaka and have set up check posts at various key locations. Besides, the police are conducting special operations on roads and highways.
