The BNP has announced a rally at metropolitan and district levels across the country on January 25 pressing home its ten-point demand, seeking the formation of a non-partisan caretaker system, unseating the government, and freedom of all political prisoners, including Khaleda Zia.

BNP Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain made the announcement on Monday afternoon while addressing a protest demonstration held in front of the party’s Naya Paltan Office in Dhaka.

Leaders and activists belonging to BNP and its associate bodies organised processions and rallies during Monday’s demonstration, seeking implementation of the party’s ten-point demand, and cutting electricity prices.

Speaking at the programme, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, “This government hiked electricity prices just a few days ago. They said that the power prices will be adjusted on a monthly basis.

“This means the government plans to hike electricity prices every month. During the BNP government’s tenure in 2006, the price of per unit electricity was Tk 2.07, which is now above Tk 11.”

He alleged that the government is hiking electricity prices so that it can embezzle money from the sector through quick rentals.

The BNP leader further said, “This government is laundering money abroad through syndicates, and building homes and wealth overseas. The government is involved in mega irregularities using mega projects. This has destroyed the economy.

“The government wants to raise bank interest rates to make the International Monetary Fund (IMF) happy. But the IMF is not happy. We must get rid of this government. After we achieve that, change will come. This change will be an outline for the 27-point restoration process.”
