AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, the Awami League mayoral candidates, have unofficially been elected as mayors of Rajshahi and Sylhet city corporations, respectively.
Based on results from all 190 polling centres, Anwaruzzaman of Awami League secured victory in Sylhet with 118,614 votes, while his closest competitor, Nazrul Islam Babu from the Jatiya Party, got 52,321 votes.
The Sylhet City Election Returning Officer, Faisal Qadir, unofficially declared the results on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Khairuzzaman Liton won the mayoral race in the Rajshahi City Corporation for the third consecutive time. With results from all 155 polling centres, Liton secured 159,797 votes, while his nearest rival, Maulana Murshid Alam Farooqui from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, received 13,393 votes.
The Returning Officer, Md Delwar Hossain, unofficially confirmed the results around 8:45pm.
Earlier in the day, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal estimated the voter turnout in the Sylhet city polls to be around 46 per cent, while in the Rajshahi city election, it ranged between 52 per cent and 55 per cent.
Habibul stated that both elections were conducted without any major untoward incidents.
He expressed satisfaction that voters were able to exercise their right without obstacles, emphasising that the elections were held in a free and fair manner, accompanied by a sense of festivity.
